Dog Manners

CometDogU’s Dog Manners classes are designed to create a well-behaved dog. The emphasis is on basic skills such as polite walking, come, sit, down and stay. Attention, leave it and settling (on a mat or in a crate) are additional skills that make a dog that the whole family can live with. Our more advanced manners classes enable dogs and owners to practice their new skills in the distractions of the real world. Our good dog series addresses real-life challenges including pulling on leash and coming when called. Whether you have a puppy or an adult dog, we have a class for you.

Dog Manners Class Descriptions

Puppy Kindergarten (6 weeks)

Dog Manners - Puppy Checking Out StatueA puppy class is the best way to get your new pup off on the right paw. Socialization and early education are vital to helping a puppy “read” other dogs and acclimate to new situations. We’ll introduce basic behaviors such as sit, down, come, leave it and polite walking on a leash; and we’ll offer tips to help avoid problems as your pup grows. There will also be play time for the puppies and time for the puppies to meet the other people in the class.

For puppies from 10 to 16 weeks old at the start of class. Puppies must have at least 2nd set of puppy shots one week before start of class.

It’s time to improve your basic dog manners skills. This class will add distance, distraction and duration elements to the skills you learned in Canine Life Skills 1: attention, settling (on a mat or in a crate), sit and down, polite walking, come, wait and stay, and leave it. Building these skills turns your dog into a well-mannered companion who can calmly help greet guests at home and be your best friend out-and-about at neighborhood parks and dog-friendly events. During this class we’ll also work on the requirements for AKC’s Canine Good Citizen test.

At the end of class, you’ll have confidence in your dog’s abilities. You’ll be on your way to the awesome behavior that makes you and your dog welcome wherever you go.

Prerequisite: Canine Life Skills 1, Puppy Kindergarten or equivalent

Canine Life Skills 3 (6 weeks)

Dog Manners - Sheltie at RestaurantBuilding on the skills you learned in Canine Life Skills 1 and 2, we’ll prepare your dog to encounter real-life situations, where you will put those skills into practice. Distance, duration and distraction combine to become more challenging as we introduce new environments. Along the way we’ll add some clever tricks to impress your friends. At the end of class, we’ll take a field trip to a nearby pet-friendly location to show off your advanced skills in a real-world setting. The class will also cover the preparation you need to take the AKC’s Community Canine (CGCA) test.

Prerequisite: Canine Life Skills 2 or equivalent

Good Dog Skills

Come When Called (2 weeks)

Does your dog ignore you when called to come back? A reliable recall may save your dog’s life should they decide to cross the street, chase after a car, or any other potentially dangerous situation. Join us to teach your dog to reliably come every time they are called no matter what the distractions. Your pup will learn that running to you is always more rewarding than not coming back.

This class is comprised of two consecutive classes, once a week, for a total of two classes.

Minimum age: 16 weeks (or instructor’s approval) with current vaccinations

Polite Walking (2 weeks)

Does your dog take YOU for a walk? This class will focus on training your dog to walk politely on a loose leash. Many dogs pull excessively when on a leash, making taking a walk unpleasant and dangerous. It can also be very harmful for both the handler (shoulder, back and neck pain) and the dog (compressed trachea). Attend this class to help your dog learn polite leash walking. They’ll enjoy more exercise and socialization and you’ll discover that walks can become a fun treat.

This class is comprised of two consecutive classes, once a week, for a total of two classes.
